Description

Yes, there is an ocean view. But the property is also noteworthy for its heath, where unusual species thrive. Big bluestem in particular is of interest to the land bank here, since it is uncommon on the Vineyard and was incorporated into the grassland through the agency’s restoration efforts. This preserve sits in the middle of a cross-town trail loop which encompasses the Fulling Mill Brook Preserve, Peaked Hill Reservation, Middle Line Woods Preserve, Tea Lane Farm and the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation’s Middle Road Sanctuary.

Access

Park at the Fulling Mill Brook Preserve (property no. 1) and hike to Ocean View Farm via the trail system. For visitors requiring an on-premises universal access trail, start at Beetlebung Corner and travel on the South Road in the direction of West Tisbury; after 1.6 miles turn left onto the Ocean View Farm Road and then, 0.4 miles later, right onto Trails End and then look for land bank logo on right.

Historical Highlights

  • this area of Chilmark has an extensive history in farming; large tracts of land were owned and farmed by a few dozen well-known families south of the Middle Line including the Cottles, Tiltons, Allens and others during the 18th into the 21st century.
