The handsome wet-meadow here, where the Mill Brook gathers itself as it begins its path to the Chilmark Ponds, Upper and Lower, is the penultimate punctuation mark for motorists who are traveling the North Road from North Tisbury to Menemsha. They’ve experienced a lot of shade, green and cool, and then here pops the bright open field surrounding the Bliss Pond.

Historical Highlights
- Elmer Jared Bliss, Jr., the grandson of Edgartown whaling captain Jared Fisher, once owned this farm. Known as the “human dynamo,” he was a prominent businessman — he opened a chain of shoestores across the country — and inventor and is credited with operating the first automobile on the Vineyard, in 1900.
- Captain Stephen Flanders was known for never whaling on Sundays.
