East Pasture Preserve

Size

5.4 acres

Description

The preserve is a node for hikers in a planned long-distance trail that will connect to the Black Brook Preserve and Toad Rock Reservation … but is a stand-alone and stand-out for any visitor. A stream wigwags under footbridges; Nashaquitsa Pond spots up in the distance as the path descends; and the salt-marsh glows in sunlight.  Signs mark the limit of the public beach and the start of the abutting private properties.  As for kayaking, the terrain is too rugged and the distance too far to portage a boat from the trailhead; kayakers instead should approach the preserve via the Menemsha Pond.

Access

Start at the Aquinnah-Chilmark town line on the State Road. Travel into Aquinnah 0.5 miles; turn right onto the East Pasture Road.  Follow the East Pasture Road for 0.3 miles and turn right onto East Pasture Lane.  Drive 0.1 miles and turn left into trailhead.

Historical Highlights

Before severalty, Gay Head was sectored into various great pastures, ploughed in common:  Middle Pasture, North Pasture, South Pasture and, in this quarter of the town, East Pasture.
